Why the NFL is the"No FUN League": Reason #69 - NFL bans booze from team functions, flights

Ok, I know what the league is trying to do here. I know there is an image to maintain, or in this case to clean up after the train-wrecks that are players like Tank Johnson, PacMan Jones, et. al. But really, is this a solution? Or is this the tail wagging the dog? When will adults begin acting like adults? Oh, yeah, right... how can we expect these young men who, except for a few, have had little to no male role-models to guide them into manhood? This might help, but that's it. It is no solution to the bigger problem and I think the NO FUN LEAGUE is just hiding their heads in the sand with knee-jerk reactions like this. I think by making it a very public announcement, that is all they are doing. It is very much "Look at me! Look what I'm doing..."

All flash; no substance...

Half of Big 12 makes NCAA baseball field

Probably should have had a seventh team, but the Sooners were not good enough in the eyes of the NCAA gods... Not sure if they were better compared to teams from the SEC, PAC 10 or even Big 10, but I'm fairly sure they were better than some of the lesser conference champions that do get in... But that's the nature of the beast when you get automatic bids for conference champs. The 'Horns will host a regional, but at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, which is actually a closer drive for me, if my daughter doesn't play in a tournament in Houston this coming weekend. Texas will also host a Super Regional in Corpus Christi if they win the regional.

Go 'Horns!

Update: The experiment proved worthy, for me anyway... 46 page views, 32 readers... interesting.

Google Trends is a list of the top searches on Google. I thought I would try an experiment and see if my blog gets any hits by posting this. Rather unsophisticated, but just a test. Shotgun approach, if you will.

Amazon snaps up Digital Photography Review

CNET is reporting that Digital Photography Review has been bought by Amazon. This will make the owner a very rich fellow! Anyway, DPReview.com is a great site gathering information on different cameras for which you might be in the market. Just about every time I have had the need to purchase a camera, I have headed there to check them out. You pretty much can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon, my usual choice, but if you still want to read up on them, this is the place to go.

The Wonders of WD-40...

I get some random stuff that I'm not sure how or when I signed up for it. This is from 52Best, a really nice site full of feel-good stories, much like the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books...

Enjoy!

The Incredible nearly Edible WD -40

I had a neighbor who had bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck for some unknown reason. I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news.

He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do. Probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open. Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD -40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck.

I'm impressed! WD -40 who knew? Water Displacement number 40. The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts.

WD -40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a "water displacement" compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD -40.

The Corvair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. Ken East, one of the original founders, says there is nothing in WD -40 that would hurt you. In fact its basic ingredient is fish oil.

It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door whether it is plastic or glass. It's a miracle! Then try it on your stove top. Voila! It's now shinier than it's ever been. You'll be amazed.

Great with burns, bugs, scissors, zippers, fish, pigeons, arthritis and more

1) Protects silver from tarnishing.
2) Use it for bug bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.
3) Keeps pigeons off the balcony. They hate the smell.
4) Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes
5) Removes road tar and grime from cars.
6) Restores and cleans chalkboards.
7) Removes lipstick stains.
8) Loosens stubborn zippers.
9) Untangles jewelry chains.
10) Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.
11) Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.
12) Keeps ceramic and terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing .
13) Removes tomato stains from clothing.
14) Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.
15) Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.
16) Keeps scissors working smoothly.
17) Gives floors t hat 'just-waxed' sheen without making it slippery.
18) It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor!
19) Bug guts will eat the finish on your car if not removed quickly with WD -40!
20) Gives a children's play gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.
21) Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for handling on riding mowers.
22) Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.
23) Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.
24) Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.
25) Restores padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.
26) Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.
27) Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans.
28) Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles.
29) Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers keeping them running smoothly.
30) Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.
31) Removes splattered grease on stove.
32) Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.
33) Lubricates prosthetic limbs.
34) Removes all traces of duct tape.
35) Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.
36) Cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.
37) The State of New York uses WD -40 protects the Statue of Liberty.
38) WD -40 attracts fish. Spray a LITTLE on bait or lures to catch the Big One.
39) WD -40 is great for removing crayon. Spray and wipe with a clean rag.
40) Load of laundry with lipstick in it? Saturate the spots with WD -40 and rewash.
41) Spray WD -40 on the distributor cap to displace the moisture. Car will start.
42) Spray in engine carburetor intake as a "starting fluid" for hard to start engine.
43) Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.
44) Keeps flies off cows.
45) Good for oven burns. One spray and it takes the burned feeling away and heals with NO scarring.

7 Reasons Spiderman 3 is G_y...

Ok, so I was talking to a co-worker and in his opinion, Spiderman 3 is a bad movie. The CGI is very good and it's visually appealing, but the story is bad and premise is just bad... I can't take credit for all of this, but I did want to post it all the same... So without further adoo, and in deference to 101 Great Posting Ideas That Will Make Your Blog Sizzle, I give you "7 Reasons Spiderman 3 is G_y"

  1. The whole Sandman character is totally unnecessary... why is he even in the movie? Not only was he unnecessary, but the whole Uncle Ben's death storyline had to be completely re-told and changed to introduce the Sandman.
  2. Mary Jane sings... TWICE... why was this necessary? Pretty much all you need to know right there...
  3. Peter Parker dances... G.A.Y. 'nuff said... again...
  4. Venom is played by Topher Grace! Yes, Eric Forman from "That 70's Show"... As if Tobey Maguire wasn't already hard enough to accept as Spidey, but at least we could understand.
  5. Everybody cries... Did Tobey Maguire cry in every other scene? It seemed so to my daughter's friend... teenagers were put off by it.
  6. So why does Harry's butler wait until after the New Goblin and Spiderman have tried to eliminate each other to tell him that his father's wounds seemed to be self-inflicted? Of course, now they are best buds, right?
  7. Amnesia... AM-f'n-NESIA. I mean who uses this "classic" contrivance in a movie anymore? It's so... so... 70's??? Lame...
So there you have it... I think there are more, but this is what we got to before we were interrupted. If you can think of more, feel free to pile on... ;-)

ghs.google.com DNS not working - The basics | Google Groups

Interesting development here... and no response from Google that I can find.

You probably can't even get to this posting...

ghs.google.com DNS not working - The basics | Google Groups

Update: I was locked out of my domain and this blog for almost an hour. I was able to post, but no one was able to view anything I posted so a lot of good that did. Still no response from Google.

Update2: Google finally responded:

Over and over, insanity wins out...

One of my favorite truisms is Einstein's definition of insanity, which goes something like this:

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

I wasn't aware that it was Einstein who coined it, but I do remember where I heard it that it stuck and I have used it since whether I applied to my own "insanity", or applying to what other's might be doing. It has been an endless source of humor for me...

Here is an application as it applies to my local sports teams... Enjoy!

Chicago, The Band

One of my favorite groups of all-time is Chicago. I've been listening to them since early in high school. I remember hanging out with my friend, Larry and listening to Chicago 9, 10 and 11 while riding around the streets of Seagraves...

Anyway, FoxyTunes, the add-on for Firefox that allows you to control your media player from within your browser, has a new feature, FoxyTunesPlanet, and here is a snippet from that...

Chicago

Chicago is a rock band that was formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. Well known for being one of the first (and, indeed, one of the few) rock bands to make extensive use of horns, Chicago started as a politically-charged, sometimes experimental rock band and later moved to a softer sound and became famous for producing a number of hit ballads. They had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s. more...

[via FoxyTunes / Chicago]

If you use Firefox, and I'm not sure why you wouldn't, you should give this add-on a try. It's easy to use and adds tons of functionality to your browser without much clutter at all. Highly recommended by the folks here at the labs...

As always, GL&HF!

11 Tips for Better Candid Photography

I like to take candid pictures... much more than posed pictures. I get some guff about that from the fam, but, hey it's been my style since I was a kid and I first discovered an interest in photography. I will take posed pictures, but I don't like them...

I took some decent action shots this past weekend at the soccer tournament, but I was commenting to my daughter that it's difficult when you're trying to actually WATCH the game... To me, action shots are a form of candid shots.

Anyway, here are some great tips, by way of Lifehacker.

11 Tips for Better Candid Photography

Intel, Dell hold off on internal rollout of Vista

More Vista dissensia (is that a word?). Interesting that these technology leaders are holding off on deploying Vista. I can understand that Dell would choose to hold off as they are already backtracking by offering Windows XP for sale, again, and they have already announced that the Linux distribution, Ubuntu, will be offered on new PCs. Intel... I'm not so sure and, to me, says more about the OS lack of actual "preparedness", if you will. Basically, Intel is saying it's not ready for prime-time...

Don't Pump Gas On May 15th 2007

Update: This is an urban myth. Please disregard... but I will leave it up for posterity... :D

This was sent to me by my sister. Not sure of it's authenticity or legitimacy, but I thought I would post it anyway. Comments?

NO GAS...On May 15th 2007
Don't pump gas on may 15th
Body: ...in April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted
nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped
30 cents a gallon overnight.

On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas
station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over
$3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet
network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50
dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take
$2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil
companys pockets for just one day, so please do not go to
the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the
Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

If you agree (which I can't see why you wouldn't) resend this to
all your contact list. With it saying, ''Don't pump
gas on May 15th"

Is Windows Vista in Trouble?

A couple of interesting articles that I found on Slashdot.org seem to indicate troubles for Windows Vista. As you might tell from my lack of updates, Vista has NOT seen the light of day on any of my machines, since my previous efforts at the end of last year. Not sure if it will EVER see the light of day on my machines... The newest revision of Ubuntu Linux, v 7.04 aka Feisty Fawn, seems to be almost ready for prime time.
