Superstar! UT-ex Young loosening up Titans

A star in the making... no, wait a SUPERSTAR in the making. Vince (heh, like I know him...) has what it takes to be the next superstar in the NFL. Move over LT, step aside Payton Manning... there's a new sheriff in town.

Now if they could just get him some more help... but that's a different story!

Half of Big 12 makes NCAA baseball field

Probably should have had a seventh team, but the Sooners were not good enough in the eyes of the NCAA gods... Not sure if they were better compared to teams from the SEC, PAC 10 or even Big 10, but I'm fairly sure they were better than some of the lesser conference champions that do get in... But that's the nature of the beast when you get automatic bids for conference champs. The 'Horns will host a regional, but at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, which is actually a closer drive for me, if my daughter doesn't play in a tournament in Houston this coming weekend. Texas will also host a Super Regional in Corpus Christi if they win the regional.

Go 'Horns!

Sources: UT's Durant will go pro

Well, it's semi-official, but the best basketball player to EVER play at the University is going pro after only one year. However, if not for the NBA's new rule that effectively ended drafting kids right out of high school, we would not have had the privilege to watch this young man play at any college, much less Texas.

Good luck at the next level, Mr. Durant! You will be missed but you will not be forgotten...

Go Horns!

Backup QB plan emerging for UT

A little news and analysis from Saturday's Spring Game. It looks like backup quarterback will come down to who does the best over the summer during 7-on-7 drills. John Chiles and Sherrod Harris are both up to the task and both splendid athletes, who can electrify with their athletic abilities. They will provide an interesting change of pace on offense with their ability to run the ball out of the zone read sets. Should be a fun season.

The Horns add another recruit for '08

Big defensive tackle from 2006 5A Champion, Cedar Hill is the newest recruit for the Horns. You can never have enough DT and the Horns will lose a couple of good ones after next season. He will be a good addition and joins an already impressive group of verbal commitments that have picked Texas.

Also, this just in LONGHORNNATION is back in action. The site had been down for most of the this year due to hardware problems that never seemed to end. If I were them, their host, whoever it was, would be facing some legal action. I think they've moved the site to a new hosting company. I hope things go well for them from now on.

A few quick hits today

Academy Awards Tonight
If your family does a little Oscar pick contest, here's a convenient ballot to print out. We have done this for a few years now and we have a lot of fun with it. Sometimes we have prizes, sometimes it's just for fun...

Printable Oscar Ballot

Two New Commitments

The Horns got two commitments from a couple of Southlake Carroll kids. And UT cruised to a hard-fought win over the Sooners.

The two commitments are from Southlake Carroll, a current dynasty in Texas High School football and a "mythical" National Champion has won four 5A state titles and is 79-1 in the last five seasons. It's a winning program, and Coach Mack Brown loves winners.

and, finally...

UT Runs Away from OU

The victory over the Sooners was a tough one for the Horns and the loss really hurts the Sooners chances at making the NCAA Tournament, however, Capel has done a really good job under the cricumstances, like losing a lot of their top recruits, including one to UT.

UT routs Tech!

Great game for the Horns! My best friend is a huge Tech fan, so I know he's not happy this morning. Overall, it was a HUGE team win, since Kevin Durant didn't go off with a 40/20 night (eh, I exaggerate but not by much). It looks like Justin Mason and Damion James are the keys to this team being a serious contender when March Madness rolls around. Go Horns!

A little UT basketball news to start the day

I haven't written much about the Longhorns basketball team, but this years team is quite exciting and dynamic. The college game is a different beast now that the new NBA draft rules has created a scenario where the BEST players have to attend college for at least 1-2 years. In the past these players would have gone directly to the pros, ala Lebron James. This year the two best players from high school are Greg Oden, Ohio St., and Kevin Durant, already considered by some, the best basketball player ever to play at UT. This story deals with speculation that young Mr. Durant will only play one year at UT before jumping to the NBA. Personally, I wouldn't blame him for doing just that, but if he wants to stay in school one more year to try to win a national title, then I'm all for that, too! Good luck, Kevin on whatever decision you make. Your stay at UT has been a fun ride, no matter if it's one year or two!

From the Dallas Morning News:

Will Durant go pro? Don't go there

02:46 AM CST on Thursday, February 15, 2007
By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News
chipbrown@dallasnews.com

AUSTIN – The father of Texas freshman Kevin Durant said Wednesday it's not a slam dunk that Durant will turn pro after this season.

"There's a chance he would come back to Texas next year," said Durant's father, Wayne Pratt. "Kevin is so young. There's not a rush for him to go to the NBA. Right now, we're not even talking about that. We're talking about winning the Big 12, and Kevin continuing to progress academically."

Durant, the Big 12's leading scorer (24.9 ppg) and rebounder (11.4 rpg), is tired of questions about whether he'll jump to the NBA after this season. He doesn't answer them anymore because he says it draws attention away from his teammates.

"Right now, I'm trying to win games at Texas," Durant said. "That's all I'm thinking about."

Pratt, a police officer at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., said just because Kevin could be the first or second pick in this year's draft doesn't mean he'll turn pro.

"There's certain things that Kevin has to show and do before that decision is made, and we still have some things we need to see," Pratt said.

When asked about the goals Kevin needs to reach, Pratt is quick to point out that Kevin only turned 18 in September.

"It's a total thing – mentally, physically, all those things have to be intact before a decision can be made," Pratt said. "My wife and I have pretty good jobs. There's no rush for him to go to the NBA."

Kevin's mother, Wanda Pratt, is a manager for the U.S. Postal Service.

Durant made a 3.0 grade point average in the fall semester and has said he wants to improve on that this semester. He has told Texas officials will attend classes the entire spring semester, which concludes with finals in mid-May. The deadline for underclassmen to enter the NBA Draft is April 29.

Kevin Durant's concern right now is lending a hand to coach Rick Barnes and Texas.
AP
Kevin Durant's concern right now is lending a hand to coach Rick Barnes and Texas.

"Kevin is enjoying college life," Pratt said. "He's grown from a young boy to a young man, and he's doing well academically, which is most important to me and my wife."

Texas coach Rick Barnes said he's tired of reporters and TV commentators making assumptions about Durant jumping to the NBA. Barnes was even upset with Texas students who began chanting, "One More Year!" to Durant during Monday's victory against Oklahoma State.

"Kevin doesn't want it to be about him," Barnes said. "He thinks all that stuff takes away from the team. And all Kevin cares about are his teammates."

Barnes, whose Longhorns play at Baylor on Saturday, said Kevin's parents have been consistent in their message to him about Kevin's future.

"Kevin and his parents are smart, intelligent people, who are going to make their own decision," Barnes said. "They are not going to let other people make this decision for them."

Pratt said Kevin desperately wants to win a national title at Texas.

"Kevin's got to light that Tower up," Pratt said. "That's what we came there to do to help with getting that done. Coach Barnes laid the foundation and we just want to be a part of that. I'm looking forward to Texas being on top of the basketball world. If they play like they did Monday, I think they can get it done this season."

Mack hires a Mac, Mac Duff that is...

From the Dallas Morning News:

UT hires Mac Duff to replace Chizik

04:17 AM CST on Monday, January 8, 2007
By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News

AUSTIN – Texas coach Mack Brown on Sunday announced three-year co-defensive coordinator Duane Akina will call defensive plays and San Francisco 49ers special teams coach Larry Mac Duff has been hired to coach linebackers and assist Akina with the defense.

Larry Mac Duff

Mac Duff’s official title will be assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator. Mac Duff and Akina worked together at the University of Arizona for 10 seasons (1987-96) and also at the University of Hawaii for two seasons (1984-85).

Mac Duff, 58, joined the 49ers after two stints at Arizona where he served as the Wildcats defensive coordinator for a total of 12 seasons. Mac Duff also spent four seasons as special teams coach for the New York Giants from 1997-2000.

“Not only has he coached at every level, but he also has a wealth of experience coaching in everything from top college bowl games to the Super Bowl,” Brown said of Mac Duff.

Mac Duff will replace Gene Chizik as linebackers coach. Chizik, who called plays on defense for two seasons at Texas, left to become the head coach at Iowa State.

“This is a really unique opportunity for me that I couldn't pass up,” Mac Duff said. “I enjoyed working with the 49ers, but with the chance to work at Texas with Coach Brown, the staff and players, it was really exciting.”

In choosing Akina to call the defensive plays, Brown has put an end to changing the terminology of the defense twice in the past three years under Greg Robinson in 2004 and then Chizik in 2005.

Akina called the defensive plays in the Alamo Bowl, a 26-24 victory over Iowa in which the defense gave up big plays early but made adjustments and limited Iowa to 10 points in the second half. The Hawkeyes had 184 yards passing and 61 rushing in the first half and 90 and 28 in the second half.

The Longhorns were third nationally against the run in 2006, giving up 61.2 yards per game on the ground. UT was 99th against the pass, giving up 236.2 yards per game through the air.

The defense set a school record for passing yards allowed (3,071), completions allowed (239), completion percentage allowed (.583) and passing yards per game allowed.

Much of the team’s problems in the secondary came because of weak play at linebacker. Three members of the secondary – S Michael Griffin, S Marcus Griffin and CB Aaron Ross – led the team in tackles as Chizik committed safeties to stop the run all season long.

Akina has produced consecutive Thorpe Award winners in Michael Huff (2005) and Ross this season. Akina is expected to be more aggressive in terms of blitzes than Chizik, who preferred using a base, 4-3 defense and rushing only four.

Some more good news for UT fans...

John Chiles: 'It just makes me more hungry'

The Texas fan base is still stinging from the loss of John Brantley's commitment, but the burnt orange nation can sleep a little easier than most with the knowledge that Texas has another hotshot quarterback commitment in the form of John Chiles.

The Rivals100 member from Mansfield Summit is set to enroll at Texas in about three weeks, and he suddenly finds himself looking at what could be a wide open quarterback depth chart. It's a pretty drastic change from the scene that presented itself weeks ago, when Brantley and Jevan Snead both figured into the Longhorn quarterback derby. Throw in Colt McCoy and Sherrod Harris, and the Horns appeared to be so stacked with quarterbacks that there was some talk of Chiles moving to wide receiver.

My, how things have changed. Chiles, an athletic playmaker with legitimate 4.4 speed, will now walk into the Longhorn program no worse than third on the depth chart, and he could very well be looking at logging some playing time in 2007 depending on how things shake out. The recent developments have certainly helped kick the door open for Chiles, but he said his attitude hasn't changed with the recent recruiting developments.

"I'm still focused, just like I was from day one. I'm just trying to improve on what I can as far as quarterback," said Chiles. "Everybody has to do what's best for them. What I'm going to do is what's best for me and my team. I'm just going to try to get better for next spring and try to learn as quickly as possible."

Ever since his commitment, there have been continuous rumors of Chiles wavering (all of which have been unfounded, mind you) and Brantley's pledge to Texas was one of the reasons that some thought Chiles might look elsewhere. Those talks can officially die now, and Chiles said there was never any truth to the speculation.

"I heard rumors about (Brantley switching). Of course, everyone was talking about it. But I didn't expect it to happen. It really didn't matter to me either way. If you're worrying about competition, you're not focusing," Chiles said. "It just makes me more hungry."

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Chiles is set to move to Austin in the second week of January, and he said his entire mindset at this stage is getting himself mentally and physically prepared for life as a Longhorn. He and several of the other commitments have already struck up a friendship and Chiles said he's willing to do whatever is necessary to get himself ready for action.

"I'm just trying to be focused. Me and Tray (Allen) are actually going to work out tomorrow. We're going to work out and stay in shape, improve on whatever it is we need to improve on," Chiles said. "Of course, that includes learning the system and getting adjusted to college life, but I think going in during the spring will help me. And I'm the type of person that likes to take a weakness and make it a strength. Critics think that I can't throw, so I'm going to make that one of my strengths."

One might think that Chiles would be beaming on the inside with the knowledge that Brantley and Snead are out of the Longhorn quarterback equation, but he said he's been at peace with whoever he has to compete with for quite a while.

"I prayed about it a long time ago and I just left it at that. It seems like everything is working out for me but I have to keep focused and not let any of the outside stuff distract me from what I need to do," he said.

And what about his commitment now that reporting day is rapidly approaching?

"It's not even really a commitment anymore," he said. "It's more of a countdown to the next national championship."

John Chiles suddenly finds himself in the quarterback mix for Texas.

This is better news for us Longhorn fans...

From the Dallas Morning News...

Gilmer QB reverses field, commits to UT

11:35 PM CST on Thursday, December 28, 2006

Gilmer quarterback G.J. Kinne, who had been orally committed to Baylor, switched his pledge to Texas on Thursday night, according to Rivals.com.

Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a recruit in the Class of 2007 can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 7.

Kinne's switch comes eight days after top-rated QB John Brantley of Ocala, Fla., told Texas coaches that he was changing his commitment from UT to Florida.

Kinne, whose father Gary Joe is a linebackers coach at Baylor, had been interested in Texas, but the Longhorns never offered a scholarship after flirting with Texarkana Texas High's Ryan Mallett and Brantley.

Kinne (6-2, 207) did not return calls from The News on Thursday.

Say it ain't so, John Brantley!

Is John Brantley about to change his commitment to Texas? It certainly sounds like there is some doubt. This is a post at from Longhornnation.com -->

John Brantley's Headed To Florida (Maybe)

It's official --> Here!

However, this does not reek of the Ryan Perriloux debacle of a few years ago. Texas is in much better position to absorb this loss, however injuries and other defections could make this one tough. Colt McCoy's injury is certainly a concern as is the transfer of Jevan Snead to Ole Miss. I really think the coaches should have started Jevan in the A&M game. Colt was not his normal self - at least the normal self we had come to expect before the injury in the K. State game. That loss can be squarely pinned on the defense. The A&M game was a combination of bad defense and Colt not being up to par. Jevan plays and they win, then maybe he doesn't transfer. Again, he was just another injury away from being the starter, now he goes to Mississippi, has to wait a year to even play and he is no longer a Longhorn. I can't really fault him, but at the same time I think the coaches certainly should have given him the shot at A&M. They win that one and they were in a the Big 12 Championship game and possibly with another win, a BCS Bowl.
