The Wonders of WD-40...

I get some random stuff that I'm not sure how or when I signed up for it. This is from 52Best, a really nice site full of feel-good stories, much like the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books...

Enjoy!

The Incredible nearly Edible WD -40

I had a neighbor who had bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck for some unknown reason. I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news.

He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do. Probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open. Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD -40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck.

I'm impressed! WD -40 who knew? Water Displacement number 40. The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts.

WD -40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a "water displacement" compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD -40.

The Corvair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. Ken East, one of the original founders, says there is nothing in WD -40 that would hurt you. In fact its basic ingredient is fish oil.

It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door whether it is plastic or glass. It's a miracle! Then try it on your stove top. Voila! It's now shinier than it's ever been. You'll be amazed.

How-to advice sites

I thought I would post a list of sites I visit that provide very good and very easy to follow how-tos. These sites have a lot of information and are usually a lot of fun.

First up is the venerable Lifehacker, run by Gina Trapani. She and her staff have a lot of great stuff EVERY day, even weekends.

Another site is Hack a Day, which offers a lot of interesting "hacks" of every-day and not-so every-day items. It might be a bit too geeky for most, but is fun to visit just to see the craziness, if you will.

Instructables is a step-by-step guide to doing many things, like building and NES PC or creating a 3D effect with image editing software.

wikiHow offers featured articles on everything from How to Dress in a Sari to Do(ing) the Samoan Fa'ataupati (Slap Dance).

Make Magazine and Tricks of the Trade, which, unfortunately, is on a hiatus until who knows when, are two more resources for you quest to do something constructive. Make Magazine also has an annual Maker Faire that looks like a lot of fun!

Hope you have fun doing some projects from these great sites!

And as usual, GL&HF!

Use Vista for 120 days in evaluation mode

Here's a good tip if you want to try out Vista. Basically, Microsoft allows you to use Vista for 30 days in "evaluation" mode, but this "hack" allows you to reset the countdown timer 3 times, thus giving you four months of "free" use.

Vista Hands On #9: Use Vista for four months, free by ZDNet's Ed Bott -- Looking for real Windows Vista secrets? Everyone knows you can install Windows Vista in evaluation mode for 30 days and reset the countdown timer three times, giving you a free evaluation period of 120 days. The trouble is, you have to remember to type the magic command every 30 days or you're deactivated. Unless you know the real secret, which uses another Windows feature to automate the process. I've got the never-before-published details here.

Is your flash drive fast enough for Vista’s ReadyBoost?

As I reported previously, Vista offers some cool ways to increase performance. This is fairly comprehensive test of this performance hack with some interesting results.
